Destrehan stays perfect in district with 2-1 win over HHS

Destrehan used an opportunistic offense, superior defense and a trio of effective pitchers to edge Hahnville, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Hahnville.

The win extended Destrehan’s current win streak to eight games, all in District 6-5A play. The Wildcats, 17-9, 8-0, maintain a two-game lead over St. Amant in the district standings and are five or six games ahead of the other four district schools.

Destrehan has now defeated Hahnville five straight times, dating back to the 2009 season. The St. Charles Parish rivals have played a pair of one-run games this season and the Wildcats have won both, including a 7-6 victory March 25 at Destrehan.

Offensively, Destrehan was more limited than usual. Hahnville starter Ryne Robert pitched very effectively against the hot-hitting Wildcats, allowing only six hits and two unearned runs.

Destrehan countered Hahnville’s Robert with the trio of Matt Smith, Brandt Bourgeois, and McCune, who combined for a six-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Destrehan didn’t have many opportunities to score but took advantage of one in the fourth, parlaying two Hahnville miscues and a timely hit to score both runs, all it would need for the win.

Infield errors by the Tigers allowed both Kurt McCune and Devin Damare to reach base. In between their at-bats, Zack Schnexnaydre was hit by a pitch. Brett Hebert then delivered a two out, two strike single to center, scoring both McCune and Schnexnaydre, whose slide at home jarred the ball loose.

Bourgeois and McCune blanked Hahnville the rest of the way on only two hits, each pitching two scoreless innings.

Hahnville had taken a 1-0 lead in the third against Smith. After Matt Allo singled, Tyler Cooper reached on a fielder’s choice and then scored on Dillon Boudreaux’s RBI double.

Hahnville’s lead-off batter reached base in five innings, but the Tigers were only 1-for-13 on the day with runners in scoring position.

Seth Montz had two of Destrehan’s six hits, including a double which was the team’s only extra-base hit. Hebert had a single and the two RBIs while McCune, Sam Carriere, and Dylan Lucich also singled.

Destrehan has now won 21 of its last 23 district games, dating back to the 2009 season.

Destrehan has two players hitting over .400 for the season — Smith (.407) and Carriere (.402). Smith also leads the team in RBIs with 28. Lucich is batting .349 and shares the team-lead with Carriere in doubles with eight. McCune and Schnexnaydre each had four home runs and Schexnaydre also has 26 RBIs.
