Destrehan rolls to third straight victory

Au'Shai Smith scores on a first quarter pass Friday night against Bourgeois.

Malachi Dabney scored three touchdowns and Destrehan raced out to an early lead that set the tone in a 53-6 victory over H.L.  Bourgeois at Wildcat Stadium.

The Wildcats (4-2, 3-0) earned their third consecutive victory in dominating fashion. Bourgeois fell to 3-3 (0-2).

“We got good field position early and that set up the first couple scores,” said Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott. “It was a good way to start a football game … I thought we played well up front and put the quarterback under some pressure early, which I feel was the difference in the game.”

Destrehan landed early in this one, outscoring Bourgeois 26-0 in the first quarter and keeping the heat on from there.

Malachi Dabney scored twice in the first quarter, once on a 15-yard run then on a 10-yarder. Jackson Fields also scored on a 6-yard keeper and Au’Shai Smith – who has primarily been a quarterback and started several games last season with Fields injured – hauled in a 45-yard touchdown from Fields.

“We’ve been working (Smith) in a little bit more. He’s such a good athlete, and we don’t want to waste him on the sideline,” said Scott. “He likes it and the team likes him to be involved as well. He showed his versatility and that’s going to do nothing but help him and help us down the line.”

Khylan Rousseau scored on an interception return for Destrehan early in the second quarter. Jaylan Ash hauled in Fields’ second touchdown pass of the night. Dabney went on to add his third rushing score.

“All three phases contributed equally to the win. For us, it’s on to the next one now,” Scott said. “We’re on the right track. This is the time of year you want to be playing your best football … all you can ask for as a coach is to keep getting better each week, and I feel like we’re doing that.”
