Destrehan holds on for win at Central Lafourche

Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux may have seen his team come away with its third straight victory, a 28-21 road win at Central Lafourche – but he was not happy.

“Well, we’re not a very good football team right now,” Robicheaux said. “Way too many mistakes. We’re not very good on offense right now and we’re making mistakes on defense. My hat’s off to Central Lafourche coach Keith Menard. He did a tremendous job. Those kids came out here, a bunch of sophomores, and gave us all we could handle. We just have to be better.”

The Wildcats (5-2, 3-1) fell behind 14-0 in this one before rallying, with a third quarter rushing score by Destrehan quarterback J.R. Blood proving to be the game-winner.

Destrehan was without the services of starting running back John Emery, who was sidelined after undergoing surgery for a broken hand that could keep him out up to six weeks. With backup runner Kyle Edwards also injured with a concussion.  Ed’Juan Green got the call at tailback for most of the night.

Carl Lewis sparked Destrehan and got them on the board for the first time by returning a kickoff for a touchdown.

It was a defensive play that tied the game when linebacker Alex Huszar’s interception turned into a pick six return, making it 14-14.

Destrehan made another big defensive play on a fumble recovery, and Blood connected with C.B. Anderson for a scoring pass. With the game tied at 21, Blood’s rushing touchdown late in the third quarter provided the winning points.

But after edging East St. John in overtime a week ago in an exciting game nonetheless marred by penalties and mistakes on both sides, Robicheaux said that trend has to stop soon for Destrehan to continue to win. Destrehan saw two potential first down — and game-ending— runs by Blood negated by penalty late in play, but Destrehan retained possession after Central Lafourche was called for roughing the kicker on a punt play.

That allowed the Wildcats to kill most of the remaining clock, and Destrehan’s Denzel Riley’s interception with no time remaining officially capped things off—though Destrehan was called for a personal foul on the play, annoying Robicheaux, well-known for being a disciplinarian, in the process.

“We had personal foul calls, uncharacteristic of a Destrehan football team,” Robicheaux said. “It’s not the way it should be. It’s my fault, and we have to get it cleaned up.

“Look, right now, I’m focused on all the mistakes … our kids fought to the end, got it done, and that’s ultimately what’s important. But we have to clean this up, because we won’t win many playing like we did tonight.”

Central Lafourche dropped to 3-4 overall with the loss, with a 1-2 mark in District 7-5A.
