Explosive plays. So far this year, few teams, if any, can boast as many “splash” plays as the Destrehan Wildcats, who scored four touchdowns of 60 yards or more Friday night en route to a 34-7 road victory at Woodlawn-Baton Rouge.
Counting the preseason jamboree, for the second time this season Destrehan (2-0) started off a game with a kickoff return for a score. The first time was Kristian Mosley — this time it was Justin Jefferson ripping downfield for a 70 yard score to put DHS ahead 7-0.
“Our special teams continue to do a great job for us,” said Destrehan coach Stephen Robicheaux. “We take pride in it and we’ve got some really good athletes who play special teams for us. Anytime you can start off 20 seconds into a game and be up 7-0, it certainly helps your cause.”
Woodlawn (0-2) answered with a score of its own to tie the game. But again, it was Jefferson pushing the Wildcats ahead after Kohen Granier and he connected for a 60-yard touchdown pass that made it 13-7.
Destrehan pulled away for good from there. Granier hit C.B. Anderson for an even longer gain for his second touchdown pass of the night, this one from 77 yards to make it 20-7.
Anderson, a sophomore, is one player Robicheaux believes can continue to carve out a significant role.
“He catches the ball real well and has been doing a solid job for us,” Robicheaux said. “We’ve still got Mike (Young) healing up, and (Anderson) is one of the guys who have been stepping up in his absence. We’re excited about his play for sure.”
Mosley added a 65-yard run to make it 27-7. John Emery capped off the scoring — and a 99-yard Destrehan drive — in the third quarter with his own touchdown run.
Robicheaux said there were some hiccups throughout the night — a few promising drives bogged down due to mistakes — but also that his team never dwelled on them.
“We continued to battle,” Robicheaux said. “Defensively, Woodlawn had some good players, but we were able to make enough plays.
The game was the second matchup between Robicheaux and his former assistant coach Daniel Luquet, who took over as Woodlawn’s head coach in 2015.
“He has four other Destrehan guys on his staff along with him, so it’s kind of like a family reunion when we play,” Robicheaux said. “I think they’re going to be a real good football team down the line. Daniel’s doing a tremendous job. It’s really good to have the chance to see all of those guys again.”
