Welcome to the future

It’s graduation time in St. Charles Parish once again.

In simple language, it’s time to tell many of our younger folks goodbye as they head off to college or jobs in other localities.

And it’s time to tell many who want to stay home that there are many opportunities available for them right here where they can  take on jobs that will continue their presence here in their home parish.

Before they leave or decide to stay, we should assure them it has been a wonderful experience having them grow up in our community. We will miss them but the future is their’s and we certainly hope they will make the most of it.

But we certainly want them to know we have enjoyed their presence with us and encourage them to include us in their future plans if possible. We do want them to consider returning here in the future if they leave temporarily for one reason or another.

There are many opportunities out there to follow wherever they go. Especially here in Louisiana which offers many vocations.

You can follow the professional trail into law or medicine or other fields that require more study into higher up colleges. Or here in coastal Louisiana you can benefit from the Mighty Mississippi River which offers plentiful port and navigation jobs that can take you around the world or keep you here close to home where waterways encircle us and offer us many ways to make a living.

Louisiana has one of the greatest fishing industries of the world. Whether you’re interested in getting fish for the market or in offering sport fishing to the public, it is there.

At one time there were rich sugar cane fields and other agricultural pursuits along our coast but that has been reduced somewhat because of coastal erosion that we are now trying to correct by restoring the eroded areas. There are still many cotton fields and other forms of agricultural products going to market from other areas of Louisiana.

But whatever he or she chooses to do when they decide to finish their schooling and put their learnings to work, there are many opportunities out there which can produce a good living in the rich state of Louisiana.

And here in St. Charles Parish where the greatest river in the world meets the Gulf of Mexico near the center of the earth at the Panama Canal, we are in a magnificent position to take advantage of the education we have received and benefit from it.

So take advantage of you studies so far, students . . . graduate, then continue your education or go to other schools for higher education or get a job that you will like. A great future can be ahead of you from where you are at this point.

Take advantage of it.
