Voters have decided the parish’s direction

St. Charles Parish voters have spoken about the parish’s future.

On Saturday, voters elected Larry Cochran as their parish president and he has affirmed hurricane protection levees, drainage and flood insurance will remain his top priorities when he enters the office in January.

We congratulate Cochran, as well all the candidates who sought or won political office since October, because that’s democracy at work – and its working.

When news came of the win, Cochran said he was “very honored and humbled” by the voters entrusting the parish’s most powerful office to his leadership.

Like all the candidates who sought this office in October, he also expressed thanks to the many parish residents who were so warm and welcoming to them while campaigning.

Cochran said it confirms – again – that St. Charles Parish is a great place to live and raise a family.

And this is what is at stake for the parish – keeping it a good place to live.

Cochran will have the opportunity to build on the successes of outgoing Parish President V.J. St. Pierre and most have said St. Pierre’s administration has been beneficial to the parish so he has big shoes to fill.

Quality of life is key, Cochran told voters, and that means keeping the parish an affordable place to live and raise a family.

He has promised to support the local economy with good paying jobs and opportunities for youths so they will “always want to call St. Charles Parish home.” He has promised to expand the recreation program to include more family activities, to expand the park in St. Rose and work on building a boat launch on the West Bank, as well as work toward getting an interchange built at U.S. Highway 90 and I-310.

Having served on the Parish Council and as its chairman twice, Cochran has the experience and relationships to make good on those promises. During his years on the council, he said he sponsored or co-sponsored more than 280 pieces of legislation.

Leadership is what voters want in their parish president and what he has assured them he can provide in the next four years.

Cochran said he has the experience to “bring people together to work out acceptable solutions to diverse problems. I have the ability to listen with an open mind, as a friend once told me, ‘No matter how thin you cut the cheese, there is always two sides.’”

He said it was more important to get the job done than who gets the credit. We certainly hope so.
