Kenneth Jude Songy Sr.

Kenneth Jude Songy Sr. passed away on Jan. 9.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65-1/2 years, Iris Manning Songy, his children; Eric Songy (Kathy), Gary Songy (Karin), Kenneth Songy Jr. (Frances), Kirk Songy, Monica Songy Trepagnier (Tracy), and Daniel Songy (Jolie).

Grandchildren; Richard Jr., Kasey, Kelly, Caitlin, Christopher, Andrea, Matt, Lance, Becky, Brad, Rachel, Adam, and Jayme. Great-grandchildren; Christopher, Kelsey, Ryan, Woodrow, Ruby, Asher, Angelle, Benjamin, Tyler, and Emma. He is also survived by one sister, Enid Songy Nielsen (late Tom).

Songy is preceded in death by his son, Richard Songy Sr. (Janet), his siblings; Lois, Cleo, Elsy, Claude Jr., Gerald, Joan, Monsignor Donald, and Monsignor James, and his parents, Claude Sr. and Fabiola Laurent Songy.

He was a lifelong resident of Louisiana living his last 50 years in St. Rose. He was born in Wallace, La., on Evergreen Plantation. He grew up in Edgard and Mathews. He also lived in New Orleans and Metairie before moving to St. Rose.

A devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church. He served as a Eucharist minister and served as secretary and president of the Holy Name Society, president of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, and many parent organizations at his children’s schools. He was a longtime member of the Bar None Civic Association and the St. Rose Seafood Club.

He was a veteran who served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army as a Technician Fourth Grade earning the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, The Good Conduct Medal, The Army of Occupation Ribbon – Japan, The Victory Ribbon and 2 Overseas Service Bars and an honorable discharge in 1946. He was a member of the American Legion Post 366 in Destrehan. He attended the University of Oklahoma & Louisiana State University.  He completed training as a machinist at Delgado Trade School. He worked his entire career of 39-½ years at Pellerin Milnor Corp. initially as a machinist and later as an assistant plant superintendent.

He was an avid gardener who took pride in his roses & birds of paradise as well as his blue berries, oranges, satsumas, muscadine grapes and artichokes. He enjoyed fishing as a way of spending time with his wife, sons and daughter as well as his brothers, brothers-in-law, father-in-law and grandsons.

Songy was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a man admired and adored by his family and friends and will be missed greatly.
