Two Luling men found dead from apparent heroin overdose identified

Two men found dead from an apparent drug overdose in Luling Tuesday have been identified as John Spurgeon, 35, and Carl Moreau, 36, both of 617 Paul Frederick St., Luling.

Autopsies of the two did not reveal signs of trauma and toxicology test results are pending, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The two were found dead Tuesday at their Luling residence from an apparent heroin overdose, which Sheriff Greg Champagne said could be related to a “bad batch” of the drug laced with Fentanyl, a pain management drug that can be 80 to 100 times more potent than morphine and nearly 50 times more powerful than pure heroin.

Champagne said an investigation determined the two had obtained and injected heroin, probably simultaneously, shortly after midnight Monday.

“Both were known drug abusers,” he said. “People often asked me if anything surprises me anymore. I can say this is the first time I have ever seen a double death overdose situation such as what we discovered today.”

Champagne speculated the two deaths could be connected to Fentanyl-tainted heroin, which he said has caused an alarming number of deaths throughout the U.S.  He further accused the federal government of failing to sufficiently police cartel-produced heroin “flooding across” the U.S. – Mexican border, calling it a “travesty.”
