St. Charles Parish is the scene of another television production, the 10-episode series “Underground,” with filming scheduled this month at the Bonnet Carre Spillway recreation area in Norco.
Parish spokeswoman Renee Simpson said the production crew is building a 34-foot-long, 1850s gun boat and a floating pier at the site, which the parish will be able to keep and use.
The series, from Sony Pictures TV and Tribune Studios, follows a group of slaves who plan a daring escape from a Georgia plantation to cross 600 miles to freedom, aided along the way by a secret abolitionist couple running a station on the Underground Railroad, as they evade those tasked with bringing them back, dead or alive.
The show is scheduled to air on Los Angeles-based cable network WGN America next year.
The story comes from former “Sons of Anarchy” writer Misha Green and former “Heroes” writer/producer Joe Pokaski, with Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) executive producing.
Actors Jurnee Smollett-Bell (True Blood, Friday Night Lights), Christopher Meloni (Oz, Law & Order: SVU) and Aldis Hodge (Leverage, Straight Outta Compton) will be featured in the production.
Kanye West recently agreed to executive produce the music for the series.
Filming began April 13. The casting directors have been filling numerous roles as filming is held throughout Louisiana, including Baton Rouge, Vacherie and St. Francisville, according to cast calls online.
In St. Charles Parish, filming is scheduled in portions of the Norco recreational area with campsites 1 – 5 to be closed on June 10-19, the pavilion will be closed June 14 – 17 and the boat launch will be closed on June 15, all for filming, according to St. Charles Parish government.
