Young basketball players across the parish will soon have a chance to lace up their sneakers and hit the court for another season of hoops.
Registration for the parish’s 2026-27 youth basketball season will open Sept. 1, with boys and girls ages 5 to 15 eligible to participate.
The Department of Parks and Recreation will accept registrations through Sept. 19.
Grayson Touchard, a spokesperson for the department, said there is no cap on the number of children who can participate as long as they register by the deadline.
“We do not cap our limit for registrations,” Touchard said. “We allow everyone to play if they register on time.”
Last year, 902 boys and girls registered for the parish’s basketball program.
The upcoming season will run from November through January. Once teams are formed, practice schedules are largely determined by individual coaches and their availability. Touchard said most teams average about two practices per week.
Each team typically plays eight to 10 games during the regular season, followed by playoffs and championship games.
This year marks the 11th consecutive season that the department has partnered with the New Orleans Pelicans to offer the youth basketball program. The partnership began in 2015 and has saved the department nearly $150,000, according to the parish.
Registration costs $35 per child. Boys receive a reversible jersey featuring the Pelicans logo and shorts, while girls receive a reversible WNBA jersey and shorts as part of the registration fee.
Parents can register their children through the St. Charles Parish Department of Parks and Recreation’s online Self-Service Account.
