TV romance films for second season in Norco

The streets of St. Charles Parish are increasingly offering a reminder that Louisiana’s “Hollywood South” moniker is in no way a thing of the past.

Late last month, filming for the television series Cherish the Day took place in Norco, the 900 block of 3rd Street from Apple Street to St. Charles Street closed off for the shooting. Delta Blues Productions, LLC worked with St. Charles Parish Economic Development and Tourism to facilitate the project.

The series airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network and is preparing to air its second season, for which the Norco scenes were filmed. The show is a romantic drama anthology created and produced by Ava DuVernay. The series chronicles the relationship of one couple, with each episode spanning a single day marking a significant moment. The full first season of eight episodes crossed five years.

The series starred Xosha Roquemore and Alano Miller in season one and the title references the Sade song Cherish the Day. The third star of season one was Cicely Tyson, who passed away in January at the age of 96. The show represented the last television role for the longtime actress.

This time around, the show will follow another relationship and two new stars. Joy Bryant and Henry Simmons will headline this season, which chronicles the love story between their characters, Ellis (Simmons) and Sunday (Bryant). The two fell in love in high school and found themselves reunited in New Orleans. Ellis is a single father and former basketball player, while Sunday is an ascendant celebrity chef whose star is growing.

The show premiered in February of 2020 and its renewal was announced in October. On average during its seven-week first season, the series ranked first in its time period across all of cable with African American women, households, and total viewers.

It’s the latest instance of filming in the area, not long after St. Rose’s Aaron Campeaux Towing was featured in season two of the A&E series Hustle and Tow, with St. Charles Parish settings prominently shown during the season.

Harry Hurst Middle School was a site for filming for the Netflix movie Home Team, which is centered around Saints head coach Sean Payton in the aftermath of Bountygate, as he became the offensive coach for his son Connor’s sixth grade football team.

In March, the USA Network crime drama “Fit for a Queen” filmed scenes in Luling, and in February, another crime drama, FOX’s Blood Relative, shot in Des Allemands.

Activity has ramped up after a year of hiatus due to COVID-19, indicating the pandemic only stalled the area’s momentum as a popular filming backdrop. Last year, the Amazon Studios movie production Troop Zero shot part of its film in Luling. In 2018, scenes for the show NCIS: New Orleans were shot in Hahnville and Ama. Norco set the scene for part of the tale in the TNT series Tell Me Your Secrets and Luling played host to Oprah Winfrey’s series Queen Sugar, both in 2018.
