Work will begin on adding a right turn lane to heavily trafficked Barton Avenue in Luling by early next year.

Scott Boyle, assistant district administrator of operations with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), said the lane will be added on the Barton Avenue approach to U.S. Highway 90 west to improve traffic flow and capacity, particularly for right turning vehicles.

Bids will be taken on the estimated $300,000 project later this year. Construction is expected to begin in February of next year.

The lane will extend from the intersection and go over the railroad tracks or about 200 feet, Boyle said.

“We want to improve traffic flow at this intersection and, most importantly, for motorists approaching Highway 90,” he said.

An estimated 5,400 vehicles a day (traffic on both lanes) use the two-lane Barton Avenue approaching Highway 90, he said.

A 2016 traffic count also showed an estimated 29,000 vehicles (in both lanes) travel daily on Highway 90 west of Barton Avenue, Boyle said. A traffic signal being at the intersection indicates the significant side street demand.

When the turn lane is completed, the avenue will have a three-lane approach.

No additional land or rights of way will be needed for the project. The DOTD has sufficient land to do the project, as well as is working toward relocating railroad signals there.

“No private properties will be impacted by this project,” he said.“This project is being done more for capacity to increase traffic flow. This isn’t a safety project.”
