Debris collection deadline extended

St. Charles Parish has extended its debris collection, and residents are now asked to put out all debris by Jan. 10, 2022.

“After multiple conversations listening to the concerns of our residents, I have decided that extending the debris deadline was the best course of action for our parish,” St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell said. “This gives our residents more time to continue cleanup efforts and ensures all Hurricane Ida-related debris will be properly removed from the parish.”

Parish officials report that to date workers have removed more than 1.1 million cubic yards of debris caused by Hurricane Ida.

The final collection pass will begin on Jan. 11 and will run until all debris is collected. Separating debris into construction debris and vegetation debris will allow for quicker pickup, officials said, adding that residents are reminded that debris should be put curbside but should not block the road.

Additionally, debris should not be put near or on trees, utility poles, fire hydrants or other structures.

Residents and contractors working in the parish are encouraged to utilize dumpsters when available and should contact the Department of Planning and Zoning regarding permitting.
