Sneaux House owner, community lend helping hand to the homeless

Items donated and delivered to area's homeless.

Pamela Guthrie’s heart breaks when she thinks about it.

“I want them to feel that someone cares for them,” Guthrie said of the homeless, many of whom have suffered through the frigid temperatures of recent days. “I don’t want anyone to not feel loved. Nobody should ever feel that way.”

It’s why Guthrie has begun making trips to deliver food, clothing and other essential items to the homeless, hoping to make a positive impact in their lives. And Guthrie is proud to say that many locals have rallied around the cause by making donations.

“St. Charles Parish really hooked me up – a lot of people stepped forward and donated,” said Guthrie, owner of The Sneaux House Snowballs in Luling. “There were kids who had a lemonade stand and used the money they made to buy soaps and toothpaste and donated it to the church, and the church gave that to me to deliver to the homeless. And that’s just awesome. People really came together and I’m excited about that.”

Guthrie said some bought brand-new items to donate.

“One lady bought three new throw blankets, another new jackets, another socks,” Guthrie said. “A lot of people I don’t know have made the effort to help. It’s amazing to see the community do that.”

At the Sneaux House, Guthrie has a prayer board displayed for anyone who would like to leave a prayer or find inspiration in those posted.

“You read all these prayers and see so many people who are in need,” Guthrie said. “You want to reach out and help … for me, it’s always trying to love your neighbor, to do God’s work.

“This is in my heart for a reason. God put it there. The Bible says to help others … so that’s my goal, what I want to do in life.”

She had a full car this week ready to go for delivery. Doing so in person has been important for her, as both the delivery and message carry importance. She hopes to do this once a month, and in doing so to speak to them and find out what items are most needed.

“I want them to know they matter and they’re loved,” she said. “That people do care. I hope I can get that to them … they’re out, often in the cold. I know a lot of the homeless go to shelters, but some don’t, and it’s freezing outside. Nobody deserves to live like that.”

While Guthrie said the community support has been strong in this endeavor, she hopes even more will support the cause.

“I know the people who have been helping me can only do and give so much,” she said. “I know I’ll need more people to help, and if everyone could help these people, it could make a difference.

“I know I’d like to do more. I know God wants me to do something in my life, and I’m not sure exactly what that is, so I’ll just keep following my heart.”
