Students and their parents in St. Charles Parish will see a few changes to the calendar for the 2011-2012 school year.
The School Board had a first reading of next year’s calendar, and if there are no objections, the board will have a second reading and should approve the calendar in November.
Under the proposed 2011-2012 calendar, the first day of school would be Aug. 4 for teachers and Aug. 11 for students.
Schools would again have a two-day fall break, but it would fall on Oct. 14-17 – about two weeks earlier than the current year’s fall break. The reason for the move is that state re-testing could take place just after Halloween for those students who miss regularly scheduled standardized tests in the fall, such as LEAP and GEE, according to Regina McMillan, public information coordinator for the district.
The Christmas and New Year’s holidays would be shorter than the current year, giving students only eight days off compared to two weeks this year. McMillan said that winter holiday dates have regularly fluctuated over past years depending on what day Christmas falls on.
“(The planning committee) tries to put as many days in as they can between Christmas and the new school year,” she said.
Under the proposed calendar, Students will continue to have a week off for Thanksgiving and Mardi Gras.
Students will also have a week off for spring break, but the days have changed. The current school year’s spring break extends from Thursday, April 21 to Wednesday, April 27. Under the proposed calendar, spring break in 2012 would extend from Monday, April 2 to Monday, April 9.
The last day of school in 2012 would be May 24 for students and May 25 for teachers, allowing everyone to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend.
