Powerball winner sold in Destrehan

When it comes to lottery drawings, St. Charles Parish may just have a hot hand.

Another winning ticket was sold locally, with a $50,000 Powerball winner recently purchased at Corner Market in Destrehan.

The winning numbers were drawn on March 6, with the ticket matching four of the five numbers along with the Powerball.

According to Louisiana Lottery spokeswoman BreAnne Frye, the prize has gone unclaimed so far, but that it isn’t uncommon for that to be the case so soon after a winning ticket is sold.

“You usually see the prize claimed within a month … any later than that is fairly odd,” she said. “There could be a lot of reasons for it. Someone could be talking to a financial advisor… it likely won’t be long, though.”

The window for the ticket owner to claim the prize extends until Sept. 2.

The ticket was one of two winners from the March 6 drawing, the other sold at a Racetrac in Slidell.

It’s the first lottery win of the new year in St. Charles Parish, but there are several in recent memory.

In October of 2018, a winning ticket was purchased at Champion’s Express in Boutte, that prize having gone unclaimed so far. Were it to exceed the claim deadline, it would become only the fifth instance since July of 2016 that a prize of $50,000 or more has gone unclaimed in the state lotto.

In May 2018, a Luling couple that asked to not be identified hit the jackpot when they purchased a Powerball ticket worth $100,000 from the Paradis Time Saver, the ticket matching four of the five numbers drawn. The couple had also added the “Power Play option” to the ticket and the number drawn was two, which doubled the win to $100,000.

In October of 2017, Des Allemands resident Sylvia Rome hit all six numbers on her ticket to become the sole winner of the Louisiana Lottery’s $650,000 Lotto jackpot, which was the second largest jackpot won that year.

Rome purchased her ticket from Des Allemands Cheap Smokes on Highway 90. The store received a one-time bonus of $6,500, which is 1 percent of the prize, for selling the jackpot-winning ticket.

Prizes can be claimed through the Louisiana Lottery headquarters. Call (225) 297-2003 for information first, or if out of state, call (225) 297-2003.
