Forces parents, children to flee park
An 18-year-old Destrehan man was arrested after waving a shotgun in the air near a T-ball practice, which sent parents and children scurrying from the area, according to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange said that Ollie Hull III, of 25 Houmas Place, waved the gun in the air and threatened to shoot 17-year-old James Compton after the two had gotten into a fight at the Ormond Boulevard park last week. LaGrange said that Hull was at the park because his friend had bought a new 870 Remington pump-action shotgun and the two were hoping to try the weapon out.
“It’s a business and residential community so I don’t know why they thought they would be able to shoot the gun,” LaGrange said. “When they got there and saw all the people, they didn’t get a chance to try.”
Shortly after the two arrived at the park with the shotgun, authorities say Hull was approached by Compton. LaGrange called Compton the instigator of the fight.
The two exchanged words and Hull tried to walk away.
However, the two eventually got into a fistfight near the T-ball outfield while children were getting ready to practice.
After the fight, Hull told Compton he was going to get a gun out of his friend’s truck. When Hull got the gun out of the truck, he waved it in the air, but his friend persuaded him to put it away.
“At this point, multiple people fled the area, with parents grabbing their children and pulling them off the field,” LaGrange said. “Some people got into their vehicles while others ran to a local business.
“There were a lot of scared parents and we started to get a lot of calls at that point.”
When sheriff’s officers arrived at the scene, Hull, his friend and Compton had all fled.
“But while we were interviewing witnesses, Hull was seen riding in his friend’s truck on Ormond Boulevard,” LaGrange said.
Hull was booked with aggravated assault, terrorizing and disturbing the peace.
LaGrange said that a warrant has also been issued for Compton’s arrest. He is charged with disturbing the peace by fighting and simple battery.
“This could have turned out very badly,” LaGrange added.
