Parish auctions off vehicles, equipment

Hundreds from several states have flocked to auction in the past

Cars, trucks, lawn mowers, computers and heavy equipment like excavators and tractors will be auctioned off on May 1 by St. Charles Parish.

The last time the parish held an auction was in 2008, and 209 people, including those from states like Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi, bid on the items.

Though the event begins at 8 a.m. on May 1, residents can take an early look at the equipment on April 30 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the CVS parking lot in Luling.

“All of the equipment is in pretty good shape,” Susan Wilson, a purchasing agent for St. Charles Parish, said. “The items that are up for auction have become unnecessary as departments upgrade their equipment and it got to the point where the cost to maintain them was just too much.”

The parish doesn’t hold auctions annually, but tries to have one every other year, Wilson said.

Besides computers, other office equipment like desks, chairs, printers, copiers, TVs and supplies will also be up for auction. Wilson said that 99 percent of the computers were purchased by the parish at least five years ago.

While some people come to check out the office equipment, most come for the vehicles. Thirty-six trucks, jeeps and cars are in the auction. Some of the offerings include a Buick Park Avenue with 107,694 miles, a 2003 Ford pickup truck with 114,973 miles and a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck with 114,709 miles.

A majority of the vehicles are in running condition, while some need additional work such as the installation of a fuel pump.

Other outdoor items include trailers, old wastewater pumps, arc welders, backhoes, air compressors and wastewater floats. A marsh buggy excavator and a rescue fire truck with two generators and a TV will also be auctioned off.

Those buying auction items must present a cashier’s check, bank letter of credit or cash. A professional auctioneer will handle the auction.

The auction will be held at 1313 Paul Maillard Road next to CVS Pharmacy inside and outside of the old Winn-Dixie Building.

State law prohibits parish employees from purchasing items at the auction.
