Longtime J.B. Martin teacher drowns while fishing in Bayou Gauche canal

A longtime J.B. Martin teacher was found dead on Friday, her body floating in a canal off of Bayou Gauche Road.

The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office does not suspect foul play and believes Dolores Hensley, 67, of Paradis, drowned while fishing. However, they are awaiting the results of an autopsy before releasing a definitive cause of death.

Hensley, who worked as an educator with St. Charles Parish Public Schools for 29 years, had a history of seizures and couldn’t swim.

She went fishing in the canal on Thursday on her way back from caring for children in the area. After Hensley did not return home Thursday night, her family began calling local hospitals to find out if she had a medical emergency.

They also began their own search.

It was not until Friday morning that Hensley’s son discovered her car parked on Bayou Gauche Road north of Rivet Lane.

Hensley’s body was floating in the water below a wooden bridge with a fishing pole partially submerged next to her.  Her cell phone and money were still inside the car.
