The old Killona Elementary School certainly has seen better days and they may all be behind the old structure as the cost to repair the school is a more than the school board bargained for.
The Capital Improvements Committee meeting met June 4 to discuss whether to repair or demolish the dilapidated building at the cost of $562,000. Estimates to repair the school were sought after board member Ellis Alexander requested the figures citing the school was run down and needed to either be repaired or demolished entirely.
The school would require a myriad of improvements, the most costly include new electrical wiring at a cost of $170,000 and a new air conditioning system at accost of $200,000. The school would also require alarm systems, asbestos removal, and other cleanup and repairs.
School Superintendent Rodney Lagoon thinks it might be best to say goodbye to the old structure, as it’s just too cost-prohibitive.
“If we find that there is a need later for us, whether it be classes or something that we have to set up then I would suggest we use something along the lines of modular classrooms to see how it goes and if there really is a need in this area,” Lafon said. “But right now we’re talking about a very dangerous thing and a very expensive thing to do.”
The board will seek a price for demolishing the school and should have those numbers in an upcoming committee meeting.
