Jewell signs executive order ahead of Tropical Storm Francine, government buildings closed Wednesday

St. Charles Parish President Matthew Jewell has signed an executive order and announced that all government buildings will be closed tomorrow ( Wednesday, Sept. 11) ahead of Tropical Storm Francine.

St. Charles Parish Public Works has continued to prepare for the storm by checking all drainage conveyances and ensuring all pump stations are operational, according to parish public information officer Francesca Holt Blanchard.

Residents will start seeing impacts from the storm today, and conditions will continue to deteriorate through Wednesday. Tropical storm force winds are expected in St. Charles Parish around 1 p.m. Wednesday through early Thursday morning; additionally, upwards of 6 inches of rain is predicted for our area over the next few days.

The Des Allemands boat launch will close today at 4 p.m., and the Sellers Canal Sector Gate and Paradis Gate closed at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Garbage service will not run on Wednesday. All residents should bring their trash cans in and secure them as soon as possible.

Parish officials advise that residents should secure loose items around their homes and prepare for potential power outages.

Jewell posted an update on Facebook for residents at approximately 1:30 p.m. today:

“Please complete all of your preparations by this evening. The weather will begin to rapidly deteriorate tomorrow. We’ve been through this before, and we know what to do.
Make sure your hurricane kits are ready, secure any loose items around your home, test your generator, and have extra gas on hand. If you need sandbags, they are available at the sandbagging stations located at the East and Westbank Bridge Parks. If you notice anything that requires Parish Government attention, please call our EOC at 986-783-5050. The latest track update from 10:00 a.m. shows a shift eastward, and the storm is expected to be a Category 2 at landfall. The main threats from this storm continue to be strong winds and training rain bands. According to Entergy, we could be without power for up to 7 days after the storm. This will impact parish utilities as well.
A new forecast track will be released at 4:00 p.m. There will be a shelter of last resort available for residents living in substandard homes; more information on this will be provided soon.”
