Residents invited to volunteer on National Public Lands Day

St. Charles Parish residents are invited to help clean up the Bonnet Carré Spillway’s recreational areas and plant bald cypress trees on National Public Lands Day on Sept 28.

The volunteer event, which is organized by the St. Charles Parish Parks and Recreation Department and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will be held at 101 Lower Guide Levee Road in Norco. Volunteers should meet at the pavilion at 8:30 a.m.

There is no registration or sign-up required, and adults and kids of all ages are invited to join. There will be activities for kids at the pavilion during the event.

Grayson Touchard, a spokesperson for the parks and recreation department, said this is the second year of the event.

“This event is special because it brings members of the community into one of our parks for a day of beautification and planting,” Touchard said. “Parks and recreation strives to provide quality programs and facilities to the people of St. Charles Parish, so getting the community involved in making one of our beautiful outdoor spaces better is an added bonus.”

Touchard said community cleanup events help stir up a sense of pride among residents.

“They’ve put in the time to make the public space better for all to get out in nature and enjoy,” she said.
