For the third straight year, the St. Charles Herald-Guide was named the state’s Newspaper of the Year by the Louisiana Press Association.
The newspaper won 17 first-place awards, including those for General Excellence, Best Front Page and Best Layout and Design. The Herald-Guide’s staff also had seven second-place finishes and eight third-place awards.
“We are thrilled that our hard work in 2018 was recognized by the Louisiana Press Association,” Herald-Guide Publisher Jonathan Menard said. “Our wonderful staff put in a lot of hours each week to make sure that we produce a newspaper that the St. Charles Parish community can be proud of.”
In addition to top placement in Best Front Page, Best Layout and Design and General Excellence, the editorial staff finished on top in several major categories. Managing Editor Anna Thibodeaux had the Best Feature Story, Best Headline and Best Photo Package. Stories by Ryan Arena placed first in both Best Breaking News Story and Best Sports Story. Additionally, Arena was given the Sam Hanna Award for having the Best Regular Column.
Menard won first place in the Best News Photo category.
“Most people don’t realize that the Herald-Guide is staffed with just two writers. These two, however, produce great work week in and week out, as evidenced by their first-place finishes in all major editorial categories,” Menard said.
The Herald-Guide also took home a slew of major awards on the advertising side.
Art Director Kevin Orgeron and designer Alissa Zeringue had the Best Ad Campaign for their work with Majoria’s Supermarket, while Zeringue and Menard teamed up to take home first place in the Staff Generated Ad and Best Online Advertising Campaign categories.
Zeringue also took home solo awards for Best In-Paper Promotion and Best Online Advertising – Single Ad, while Menard won the Best Success Story of an Ad category.
The newspaper’s popular football contest also won first place for Best Multiple Advertiser Page, as did the Herald-Guide’s Camera Shootout for Best Web Project.
“We have the best designers in the business within this office,” Menard said. “They are able to take any idea and use their years of expertise to make it work for our advertisers. We are really proud of all they are able to accomplish each day.”
