Frog heist suspect arrested

Charged with robbery after 2 frogs stolen from teens

Police have arrested a Boutte man they believe pretended to be a Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agent in order to coax three teens over to a canal bank before stealing frogs from them.

Ryan Tusa, 22, of 119 Magnolia Manor Blvd., is being charged with principal to first-degree robbery and impersonating a police officer.

The incident occurred at 10:30 p.m. on July 17 when an 18-year-old man and two 16-year-old boys were catching frogs in a small boat in the canal at the end of Kellogg Street in Mimosa.

According to the teens, they were called over to the bank of the canal by five or six men who claimed to be Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents. When the teens got to the bank, one of the men pulled out a shotgun and demanded everything they had, according to the report.

The only items the teens had on them were the two frogs that they had caught, and they handed them over. The robbers then fled the scene towards the Mimosa swimming pool.

Tusa told police that he thought he knew the victims and wanted to play a joke on them.

“He said that when he realized he didn’t know them, he continued through with it,” said Capt. Pat Yoes, a spokesman for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Yoes said that the incident is still under investigation.
