Family says he is recovering
A former Hahnville fire chief, who was involved in the four-vehicle collision that killed a St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s deputy last Sunday, broke several bones in the accident but is recovering.
Tregre, 80, was driving his Ford Expedition when deputy Jeff Watson was pushed into the path of his vehicle. After the crash, Tregre was transported to LSU Public Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center with critical injuries. Many residents know Tregre because he sells cypress swings and rocking chairs in front of his home on Paul Maillard. He is also a charter member of the Hahnville Fire Department.
Tregre broke both of his legs, ankle, sternum and pelvis in the crash, while also bruising his lung. He was sedated after the crash, but doctors woke him up early Wednesday morning.
“He is showing very slow signs of progress, but we are hopeful,” Tracy Daniels, Tregre’s granddaughter, said. A blood drive for Tregre will be held Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Des Allemands Fire Department from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
Though the Louisiana State Police say that Tregre wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, Tregre’s family insists that the seat belt was yanked off of him in the crash.
