45 businesses offer services at local fest

Free health screenings, door prizes highlight event activities

Businesses from around the parish will gather at Hahnville High School this weekend to introduce themselves to members of the community, who have a chance to win door prizes and enter a raffle for New Orleans Hornets tickets.

Overall, 45 businesses will be at the St. Charles Business Association’s Business Fest and Health Fair on March 13 and 14. Activities at the annual event include the Ochsner Bloodmobile, the St. Charles Parish Library’s Bookmobile, a display of fire engine and emergency equipment, vendor prizes and raffles.

Admission to the event is free.

“This event gives people an opportunity to see what businesses we have in our parish,” Connie Richard, of the St. Charles Business Association, said. “I have lived in St. Charles Parish all my life and I am still surprised at some of the businesses we have here.

“This year we have some new businesses that weren’t at the fest last year, and we always sell out our booths.”

The businesses at the fest will have information on buying and selling a home, home improvements, ladies fashion, banking, financing, investing, health and fitness and more.
Besides the raffle to win free Hornets tickets, vendors will also be giving away prizes. Those include anything from gift baskets to offering free services and items for sale.

Something new to the event this year is that Country radio station WNOE 101.1 will broadcast live from the fest on March 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“They are going to have their van parked outside and they will give away CDs and possibly other prizes,” Richard said. “We will also have the Saintsations, Girl Scout cookies for sale and free face painting.”

The health fair side of the event consists of free health screenings from St. Charles Parish Hospital, including checks of blood pressure, bone density and body fat. The hospital will also have some of their new technology on display and the rehab department will feature Wii Fit, an innovative, fun approach to patient treatment.

There will also be some EMS units at the event, including an ambulance and a patient transportation van.

“Not many people know about our patient transportation van, but it’s something that can be really important for a lot of people that come to the hospital,” Pam Norfleet, the hospital’s director of marketing, said. “A lot of times, a family member may drop someone off at the hospital, but when they are done, they may have to wait for hours to find a ride home. With a pre-scheduled appointment for the patient transportation van, we can bring someone home anywhere in St. Charles Parish for no charge.”

Another cool vehicle on display will be a supped-up ATV unit that comes loaded with life support equipment. Because of that, the hospital can respond to an emergency in rough terrain.

The business fest and health fair, which is held in the Hahnville gym, will open on March 13 from noon to 5 p.m. On March 14, the event will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
