Two workers were injured in a fire that occurred at Air Products’ Luling plant on Monday.
The fire was triggered by a release of hydrogen gas at 11:40 a.m. The fire and gas leak were contained and the incident never posed a threat to the public, according to parish officials.
The Air Products plant, which is located next to Monsanto, produces more than 100 million standard cubic feet per day of hydrogen and generates 140,000 pounds per hour of steam.
The cause of the hydrogen gas release is still under investigation, but employees were able to contain the gas by shutting off the flow valves, according to company spokesman Art George.
George added that the off-gas processor where the incident occurred remains shut down so that officials can complete the investigation. The main hydrogen production facility continues to operate, he said.
One of the injured workers was treated and released from the hospital on Monday while the other is still receiving care, George said.
