The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking parents and children in the Lagatutta/Mimosa area to be on the lookout after a 12-year-old Luling girl told authorities that a man tried to coax her into his vehicle.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon as the girl was riding a scooter near the intersection of Terri Drive and Lori Court. That’s when she was approached by a white male in a white pickup truck who asked her if she needed a ride.
The girl declined, but told authorities that the driver followed her for a short time before driving away. The girl was unable to get a license plate number.
“This incident is under investigation and we are not able to confirm with certainty that the driver had bad intentions,” Sheriff Greg Champagne said. “However, I felt this should be brought to everyone’s attention. Please advise your children to report any contact on the street which they deem to be inappropriate.”
So far, children have been doing just that.
On Mardi Gras, the Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate two suspicious incidents that mirrored attempted kidnapping. All four children involved quickly let their parents know what had happened.
One of the incidents was cleared as a misunderstanding, but the Sheriff’s Office was unable to track down a man who asked two young children in old Luling if they wanted a ride to a parade.
Authorities do not believe that incident was related to the most recent case.
“We don’t believe they are related because of the different vehicles that were involved,” Spokesman Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange said. “However, we are going to remain vigilant and patrol those neighborhoods.
“The main thing we want is for parents and their children to report anything suspicious.”
