Kenyata K. Coleman, Brody Samaha and Dillion Hutson
Army Spec. Kenyata K. Coleman has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.
She is the daughter of Valerie Dixon of Luling and granddaughter of Ruby Nell Dixon of Hopewell Road N.E. in Brookhaven, Miss.
Coleman graduated in 2004 from Brookhaven High School and received a Bachelor’s degree in 2008 from The University of Mississippi.
Local chosen for Naval Academy summer program
The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) invited a select group of approximately 2,250 young men and women from around the nation and internationally to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar program this year.
Brody Samaha, a student at Hahnville High School, will participate in the 2011 program.
Summer Seminar is a fast-paced experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school and are considering applying for admission to USNA after graduation.
DHS student placed 1st in LA letter competition
Dillion Hutson, a sophomore at Destrehan High, placed 1st and will represent the state of Louisiana in the “Letters about Literature” contest. There were 1,286 letters submitted for his category.
His letter has been submitted to the national headquarters to represent Louisiana for the selection of a national winner.
He will receive additional recognition of his writing accomplishment at the Louisiana Book Festival to be held in Baton Rouge on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. The national winners will be announced by the Library of Congress’s Center for the Book in April. Also an essay written by Dillion entitled “A House on Pelican Circle” has been selected to to be published in Celebrating What is Important to Me by Creative Communication. His essay is in the final competition.
