United Way’s health program could change lives

With free gym membership, training, nutrition

United Way of St. Charles wants to help people change their lives.

The organization has established a 12-week program, called Get Fit United, that will be provided free to those meeting certain eligibility requirements who will be chosen through an application process.

Get Fit United is a comprehensive health and wellness program that is focusing on helping people change their lives, said Kacy Kernan, United Way’s director of Community Impact.

“Our program will focus on nutrition, physical activity, and emotional wellness to help participants reach their health goals by uncovering hidden barriers and working through them,” Kernan said. “The program is being administered by professionals in the area of health and wellness and will meet participants where they are on their journey. We believe a healthy community is a strong community.”

The requirements for free admission are that applicants live or work in St. Charles Parish, are at least 18 years of age and have a Body Mass Index of 30 or more.

The program offers professional nutritional guidance and gym membership, including coaching and training.

The 12-week comprehensive health program will see individuals participate in weekly health and nutrition classes taught at the United Way office by Ochsner Corporate Solutions personnel. In addition, participants will receive a 14 -week gym membership and personalized boot camp trainings provided by Anytime Fitness of Luling and Destrehan.

“Creative Family Solutions will work with participants to help uncover any emotional barriers that may have prevented them from success during previous weight loss attempts,” Kernan added.  “Individuals will receive free Bridge Run registrations and recognition at our annual event.”

She said that offering the program free of charge is meant to encourage those who may be held back by finances in their attempts to get fit.

“We believe that living a healthy life should be available to everyone,” Kernan said.

She said to qualify for the free admission, individuals must also be committed to the process and willing to complete all 12 weeks of the program.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 21. All applications will then be reviewed by the United Way of St. Charles Health Committee, and 40 individuals will be selected to participate.

The program is set to begin in January 2016.

As part of that same health initiative, UWSC has installed two new fitness pads, one at each of the East and West Bank Bridge Parks.

The organization also sponsored the installation of a brand new drinking water fountain at the West Bank Bridge Park levee path. It includes a traditional foundation as well as a bottle-filling fountain.

United Way spokesperson Melissa Frederick said the pads will be used as part of the Get Fit United program.
