The SCP library isn’t just for kids anymore

In today’s more ingenious, time-managed world, a hack can be one of those tricks or DIYs (do-it-yourselfers) that keep a life functioning smoothly.

Need an example?

Use a pool noodle to help keep boots stiff when stored in the closet to avoid that embarrassing wrinkly boot moment.

Wrinkled shirt collars and cuffs can be done away with by using the same flat iron used on hair.

Worried about eating that cupcake piled high with frosting – that you’re craving  – and still being polite? Well, here’s the hack: Gently take the bottom half off and place it on top of the icing to make it like a sandwich.

“It avoids that embarrassing frosting up your nose,” said Tara Lombardi, East regional librarian with the St. Charles Parish East Regional Library in Destrehan.

Lombardi has organized these tricks and tips into the library’s first Hack My Life Expo scheduled 5 to 7 p.m. next Thursday, July 30, at the St. Charles Parish East Regional Library, 160 W. Campus Dr. in Destrehan.  If the expo goes well, there’ll be another one next year.

“Hacks are big now because of the show and there are hacks all over the Internet, and YouTube is doing it as an explosion,” said Lombardi, who came up with the idea for the expo. “These life hacks are low-budget tips and tricks that can help you organize your space, find alternate uses for everyday products, or teach you how to do something better.”

Staff will demonstrate different life hacks throughout the library to help improve your quality of life at work, in the kitchen, in your closet, and online. The hacks will focus on technology, office, food and home. There will also be a “Try-It-Table” where participants can try out some hacks.

“I love life hacks and we’ve been trying to get some organizational people to come in and offer the hacks,” Lombardi said. “It’s really different than the usual library program. It’s not a book club or story time; it’s out of the ordinary.”

Lombardi said the expo fits their “Escape the Ordinary” summer reading theme. The hacks offers a way to do things better in an extraordinary.

The goal of these innovative programs is to get “all kinds of people” into the library, she said.

“We’re trying to become more of a community center, more interactive,” Lombardi said. “And we do have for people that are all about e-readers all kinds of free books to download so you still need libraries to download books and music. The library isn’t just for kids anymore.”

Downloads are free to library members, which is free. Those living outside the parish pay $5 for a membership and they also access the files.

All St. Charles Parish Library events are free of charge and open to the public. This event is intended for adults. Registration in the Summer Reading Program is not necessary to attend events. More information, including a calendar of summer events, can be found at all library locations and at www.myscpl.org/summer.
