Student-written play is first of many for HHS Drama Club

The Hahnville High School Drama Club’s latest production is unlike any other play that the school has performed.

The play is entitled “Guardian Angel” and it is the first student-written full scale production that the club has ever performed.

The play, written by student Angelle Dufrene, was performed in late April and was a huge success, according to Daniel Ruiz, drama instructor at Hahnville High.

Dufrene originally wrote a shorter script as part of a festival of short plays called “Spring Awakenings” in 2009.

“I was so impressed with Angelle’s play and the response to the play was so great that I decided to include her play as a mainstage production for this season,” Ruiz said.

Angelle spent time throughout the summer and during January of this year expanding her play into a full-length production.

“The play was chosen because it was a truly compelling and engaging story that included a bit of everything: comedy, drama, tragedy, pathos, suspense. It really has it all,” Ruiz said. “Angelle is a truly gifted writer and director. She has a clear artistic vision and knows how to tell a story on the page and on the stage.”

Ruiz said that he looks forward to producing more student works in the future.

“We intend to foster new student works to be produced in the spring every other year,” Ruiz said. “We already have one in the works. It’s an original musical co-written by three sophomores about the woes of student artists in a school environment where the arts are not supported as much as other things.”
