The St. Charles Art Guild is amongst the oldest and still functioning art guilds in the metropolitan New Orleans area. It was established in 1968 by Mariann Burns, Laura Wilk and Claire Van Wirt. Charter members were Travis Pitchford and nationally known Mississippi mud clay artist Lorraine Gendron.And the art guild will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a tea luncheon scheduled to be held at the Chateau Country Club located at 3600 Chateau Boulevard in Kenner on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The guild invites all present and previous members to join in their celebration of what the organization has accomplished in the past, is achieving in the present and what they are anticipating for the future.
The guild’s first show and sale was conducted in 1968. Soon, Fall and Spring shows became season attractions assisted by business support. .
Guild members were responsible for and supported volunteer art programs and lessons in the local school system long before art was officially programmed into the St. Charles Parish School System. The St. Charles Women’s Club invited the Art Guild’s members to create murals for the walls of the Special Education School that was in existence at the time.
Seeking new members and ideas, the Guild founded programs to stimulate artistic expression. This encouraged a deeper appreciation of fine arts for solo artists and cultivated even more community interest.
Today, the St. Charles Art Guild provides members with timely opportunities to display and market art for fun and profit through adult workshops, kids’ camps, showcases, instructional demonstrations at their meetings, field trips, and paint-outs.
