HHS grad lands gig as TV reporter

A Hahnville High School graduate and Des Allemands native will grace the small screen starting next month when his job as a multimedia journalist at KALB News Channel 5 in Alexandria begins.

Colin Vedros said he is excited about the opportunity – one that will start right after his Northwestern State University graduation.

“I cannot wait to get started in May and work with some amazing people in the world of television,” the 2018 HHS grad said. “I’m kind of nervous … I’m not going to lie, but I feel like I’m ready. I feel like I’m kind of in this weird spot because I need to focus on graduation but I’m also just really ready to hurry up and start with work and ready to get the ball rolling.”

Vedros said during his time in St. Charles Parish Public Schools he was more into music than broadcasting.

“At Hahnville I was mainly doing theatre and choir,” he said, adding that some self-discovery during high school and college helped shape his career goals. “I grew more as a person and realized that it wasn’t just about the grades … it wasn’t just about me going and passes classes but having experiences and figuring out what I can learn from that.”

While he started off college as a music major, some work in student media and internships as a reporter and at radio stations guided Vedros into media. After getting his feet wet with newspaper work, Vedros said he realized he felt more satisfaction as a TV reporter.

“It was just more my style,” he said. “With news it just felt like a perfect fit … you get to tell the story and talk about it and write about it and interview lots of people.”

While his assignment at KALB will start with his creating more general news pieces, Vedros said he would love to eventually cross over into sports reporting and broadcasting.

“I’ve stayed around sorts most of my life,” he said. “At Hahnville I played soccer, and I played baseball before that. In that sports realm … I just really feel comfortable sharing those stories.”

Vedros said he hopes his story and success can inspire others.

“I have so much support from family and friends,” he said. “You really can do whatever you set your mind to. You really don’t have any limits.”
