NORCO – St. Charles Parish honored 71 employees for their attendance and service during the 27th annual Civil Service Awards breakfast held at La Maison Magnolia reception hall. Ellen Cancienne, an accountant I in the St. Charles Parish Finance Department, was named outstanding employee of the year.
Cancienne is a 29-year employee of St. Charles Parish. She began her tenure as an accounting clerk and has worked her way up to accountant. She is known as the “go-to” employee in the finance department because of her vast experience and work ethic, said Sandy Zimmer, St. Charles Parish personnel director.
Cancienne has received multiple perfect attendance awards from the parish.
A committee made up of appointed and civil service employees of various departments chose Cancienne from a field of nominees.
This year’s committee included L.J. Brady, Nicole Breaux, Kenneth Clay Jr., Watson Cottingham, Donrell McKenzie, Kimberly Morgan and Joseph Smith.
Public Works employees Robert Lay and Kevin Leon were given special awards for heroism on the job after they rescued and got help for an elderly man who they witnessed falling into a ditch.
Rod Teamer, director of metro area business development for Blue Cross, served as guest speaker at the ceremony.
Teamer represented the parish’s health insurance provider by speaking about the company’s “Louisiana 2 Step” health and wellness campaign. Parish President V.J. St.Pierre Jr. and Civil Service Board Chairperson James “Jimmy” Breaux also spoke.
A segment on the Civil Service Awards will air soon on the St. Charles Parish Government Access Channel, Cox Cable Channel 6. Photos from the ceremony may be viewed on the parish Web site, www.stcharlesparish-la.gov under “Photo Galleries.”
