Guild members paint parish landscapes

The plein-air workshop the St. Charles Art Guild sponsored in October with instructor Phil Sandusky was a huge success. Sandusky, a native of Florida, taught the basics of landscape painting. The first morning of the workshop Sandusky lectured and demonstrated.

Students worked on their own paintings under Sandusky’s tutelage, giving then them advice and demonstrating for them individually and in small groups.

The second workshop sponsored by the St. Charles Art Guild will be held on Jan. 26 through Jan. 29 with Alan Flattmann as workshop instructor.

The title of the pastels workshop is “Landscapes and Cityscapes with Pastels.”

Flattmann is a native of New Orleans and studied at the John McCrady Art School in the French Quarter. He was to be inducted into the Pastel Society of America’s Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Masters Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2007.

Flattmann’s work is the subject of three books, “Alan Flattmann’s French Quarter Impressions,” “The Art of Pastel Painting” and “The Poetic Realism of Alan Flattmann.”

Flattmann’s goal is to teach his students a sound and fundamental approach to painting. The workshop will be an intensive period of study and cover, step-by-step the most important phases of landscape and cityscape painting with pastels. Flattmann will share the secrets of the tools and techniques he has developed over many years.

He will show how he hand prepares many of his own pastel materials and demonstrate the techniques he uses for his bold pastel paintings. This workshop will teach students how to depict impressions of the subject matter in a spirited and colorful way. Flattmann will also help students individually and hold informal critiques and discussions throughout the workshop.

Registration for the workshop will begin at the Dec. 2 meeting of the St. Charles Art Guild. The meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the First Union Presbyterian Church on Lakewood Dr. in Luling.
