Elite garden club serves east bank

If you’ve ever heard of the LaBelle Fleur Garden Club, then you know that being a member is a great way to interact with your neighbors and share a few of those truly golden gardening tips. But being a member of this elite club also means that you live on the east bank of St. Charles Parish in Destrehan either on Ormond Oaks or Murray Hill Drives.

That’s right. The club’s founder, Barbara Crespo, had a vision of a neighborhood garden group that would not only help welcome new residents to the area, but meet each month to trade gardening techniques.

“LaBelle Fleur Garden Club of Destrehan was founded in 1997,” said Cathy Montz, club member. “It was suggested to Barbara by her doctor as therapy after suffering a tragic loss.”

“She went door to door passing out brochures, and now the club has close to 22 members.”

At the monthly club meetings members discuss club business and the most up-to-date information on seasonal gardening.

“We meet the second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.,” said Montz. “And new officers are nominated in March, voted on in April and installed in May.”

Montz says that the club also has a welcome committee that greets families who move into the area.

“Our club’s welcoming committee brings a plant or flower to new residents in the area,” said Montz. “It’s a great way to welcome them to the neighborhood and get the word out there about our organization.”

All members of the club are responsible for tending to the community garden that is located at the beginning of the Destrehan neighborhood.

“Each week, we all take turns weeding and maintaining the garden,” said Montz.

Other garden club activities include donating plants or decorated Christmas trees for special occasions to organization like the Friends of the Library.

The club’s motto is “Love Makes All Things Grow.” It’s colors are beige and green and the Lily is the club flower.
