Des Allemands native turns 95

Albert “Buddy” Mott, Sr. has a lot to be grateful for. After all, the Des Allemands native just celebrated his 95th birthday.

Born in 1914, Mott spent most of his life as a farmer – a trade that he learned from his father. On any given day, you could find him tilling, planting and harvesting the crops, and also selling the farm produce. Many say that he also possessed the innate ability to select the right plot of land to grow his produce.

Although his fruits and vegetables were priced for sale, many were also given away free of charge. And those who know him agree that his generosity knew no boundaries. He would gladly plow land or cut grass for neighbors or others in the community.

Not only was Mott known as an excellent farmer, he was also a wonderful father. He and his wife, the late Enola Scott Mott, were blessed with 12 children – Albert Jr., Albertha, Annie Mae, Nolan, Irvin, Michael and the late Patricia, Dorothy, James, Delores, Lawrence and Shirley.

Mott’s inherited ability to farm was passed down through the generations to children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His daughter Shirley used to pick okra from his patches in Paradis and Annie Mae would use her marketing skills to help sell the produce.

Although Mott now uses a walker to get from place to place, friends and family say that he can out walk most and would probably still be farming today if he could.

“We who know him are truly blessed and fortunate,” say members of his family. “In our opinion, he is and will continue to be a role model for the young as well as the elderly.”
