Beauty & the Beast

River Region Drama Guild puts on production of timeless Disney classic

One of Disney’s most critically-acclaimed musicals comes to life this month as the River Region Drama Guild presents Beauty and the Beast. It’s a tale as old as time. When a young prince refuses the rose of a beggar woman, she instantly transforms him into a hideous beast and all his servants into different objects.

Forced to fall in love before the last rose petal falls, Beast meets Belle, a beautiful young villager who has a love of life and reading.

The performance features such show-stopping musical numbers as “Be Our Guest” and “Gaston.”

“It really is a show for the whole family,” said director Chris Melohn, who also directed last summer’s RRDG production of Into the Woods.

Edward White, who plays the Beast, has 10 years experience in musical theater, and says that all though he enjoys acting, it does have it’s challenges.

“The most challenging part is making it as real as possible, especially with enchanted characters,” said White. “You want to show that they have very real feelings because everyone can spot a faker.”

The production is under the musical direction of Brenda Castillo with Sarah Melohn and choreography by Susan Ferrara.

Beauty and the Beast opens at Destrehan High School Thursday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Other scheduled performances are June 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and June 13 at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12 years of age.
