Parents with children in school system best to serve on board

To the Editor:

Qualifying for the St. Charles Parish School Board election will be held on July 7, 8 and 9. We would like to encourage all citizens, especially parents of children currently enrolled in the public school system, to consider qualifying and running for the school board from their respective school board district.

These are part-time positions, and we can think of no one better than parents with children in the system to occupy these positions. They will have the opportunity to craft policies regarding the education of their children and make decisions on how best to spend taxpayer dollars in a manner which will produce the greatest benefits for our children.

It would be great to see new faces with fresh ideas sitting on the school board in the future, especially parents who have a vested interest in their child’s education and future. Several of the present board members have been sitting on the school board for many years, and I believe, at the present time, there is only one member with a child attending school in St. Charles Parish.

In past elections, many of the school board members have gotten “free” seats because no one qualified to run against them. We believe there are many citizens of this parish who would do a great job if elected to the school board; however, they just don’t give much thought to getting involved in the political process. This needs to change and you can be the one to make it happen.
