To cut taxes or not is the question

The big question facing Congressional leaders before the end of the year is who can do the better job of improving the economy – – the government or private enterprise?

If they believe the latter, they should leave all the Bush tax cuts in place. But of course, if they believe a group of politicians in Washington can do a better job of providing goods and services to the people, then we should become a socialist empire like Cuba..

And by the way, Cuba seems to be going the other way. Its leaders are planning to slash the government work force and allow the  country’s private sector to do more.
The government employs 95 percent of the working people there. Many of those do very little work and produce nothing that can build the economy.

Average salary in Cuba is $20 per month. They do get free health care and other services but we’re sure it does not compare with what can be provided by a free enterprise economy.

The other possibility facing Congress is to eliminate the tax cuts for couples and small businesses making more than $250,000 a year. Allowing them to earn more with less taxation, however, should increase the possibility that such businesses would expand their operations which in turn would  improve the economy.

As for the growing deficit, the best way to eliminate that would be to reform government and cut it to the point where it can provide its necessary services within the budget allowed by the tax cuts for all.

As we know, this country did not grow into the leading economy of the world by letting the government run it. Free enterprise did it.

Ground Zero mosque could serve a purpose

The more we think about it, the more we like the idea of having a mosque in close proximity to the 9/11 calamity caused by terrorists. It would be a place for muslims to pray and meditate on the tragedy that unfolded. And planners say they would include chapels where Christians and Jews also could pray in the same building with Muslims which may welcome in a new enlightened age.

In other words, the three major religions would be able to marshall their people to go there and help bring reason and religion to the area which could inspire the world toward a peaceful existence.

It would be a remarkable experience for the world’s major religions to join together somewhere and at least in their own ways pay respect to God and ask for the solution to the world’s problems. It would certainly be an improvement on the present-day level of communication between the different sects.

Let us hope that if the mosque is built in the Ground Zero area, it will inspire people around the world to solve our earthly problems so everyone, no matter what religion or ethnicity, can live peaceful and productive lives.
