Gov. Blanco makes the grade – unfortunately, it’s an flat “F”

The other day when I got a note from fellow “Internet Kook” Emily Metzgar reporting that Gov. Kathleen Blanco had received an “F” from the Cato Institute for “Fiscal Policy,” I wanted to say, “DUH.”

The news came in this Associated Press report:

Blanco gets failing mark on fiscal policies

NEW ORLEANS (AP) A Libertarian think tank in Washington gave Democratic Gov. Kathleen Blanco one of its worst grades Thursday for fiscal policies the group said has sparked massive government growth in Louisiana.

The Cato Institute’s biennial fiscal policy report for the nation’s governors … said those governors who oversee state governments with lower taxes and spending fare better than those who don’t. The grades are based on 23 measures of fiscal performance.

Cato ranked Blanco last on the list of 46 governors examined.
So not only did our governor flunk, folks, she came in last. Currently, while the state has an “embarrassment of riches” (surpluses and revenue windfalls) Gov. Blanco’s approach is to put the state into further debt and to sell off assets. With that type of fiscal policy she should be happy that Cato doesn’t have a grade below “F”.
