The last minutes of a Destrehan High senior’s life reportedly ended Wednesday (May 4) with him exchanging words with a New Sarpy man who witnesses say simply pulled out a gun and shot him pointblank in the head.
Only days before his graduation, Kendall Williams Jr. was found dead by St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives in a small park at East Harding and Eighth streets in New Sarpy at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 4).
Hours later, deputies arrested Javon D. Wells, 22, of 740 East Hoover St. in New Sarpy, and charged him with second-degree murder.
Sheriff Greg Champagne said motive in the killing is still under investigation, but is not required to make a second-degree murder arrest.
“Words were exchanged between the two, and the man pulled a gun and shot him in the head once,” Champagne said of witness accounts.
Witnesses also identified Wells as the alleged shooter. Champagne said “the two did know each other.” Wells was being held on $1 million bond at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center as of Thursday.
St. Charles Parish School System spokeswoman Stevie Crovetto said support is being provided to students and staff in accordance with the district’s crisis management and emergency response plan.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of a Destrehan High School senior who was shot and killed last night,” Crovetto said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the students and staff at Destrehan High School and our community.
She said, in addition to school counselors who are on site daily, additional support staff members are at the high school to assist students and staff.
