Waffle House beating sends man to ICU, police say

Three men were arrested on charges of battery after an incident Saturday night at Waffle House in Boutte that resulted in a victim being taken into intensive care.

23-year-old Jejuan Hills of Luling, 20-year-old Donte LaBranche of LaPlace and 20-year-old Derek Smothers of New Orleans were each charged with second-degree battery after the altercation allegedly ensued between the three men and the victim.

According to the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, the victim was punched and fell to the ground, leading to LaBranche, Smothers and Hills allegedly kicking and punching the victim numerous times before fleeing the scene.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit with multiple injuries.

The three men were arrested after deputies stopped their vehicle away from the scene.

In addition to second-degree battery, LaBranche was charged with carrying an illegal weapon and being a fugitive from another agency.
