Construction at Wetland Watchers continues

By Renee Allemand Simpson

Norco’s newest park is on its way to completion.

Wetland Watchers Park, near the lake in the Bonnet Carre Spillway, has had its shoreline reinforced, and the handicap-accessible fishing pier is completed. The pavilions are currently being constructed.

The park is still under construction, and we appreciate your patience. Parish officials are urging residents not to utilize the park until construction is complete, as builders are using heavy equipment and other machinery.

The park is set to host a grand opening ceremony very soon. Stay tuned to Cox Channel 6, the parish Web site and the Herald-Guide for more details.

Be counted today

If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to return your Census form in the mail.

The Census is very important for local governments because it paints a picture of the need for federal funding in our communities. This will help us in our request for funding for critical infrastructure projects, including hurricane protection levees.

More information can be found at www.2010census.gov. If you need help filling out your Census form or need to be mailed a replacement form call 1-866-872-6868.

Rabies vaccination day

The St. Charles Parish Humane Society will hold its annual rabies vaccination day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25 at the East and West Bank Bridge Parks in Destrehan and Luling.

The cost per vaccine will be $10, and microchips will be offered for $20. There will 50 microchips available per location on a first-come-first-served basis.

Local ordinance requires all dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies on an annual basis, and owners are required to be able to show proof of the date of vaccination administered by a licensed veterinarian.

All those requirements can be met by taking your pets to the vaccination day. Please call St. Charles Parish Animal Control at (985) 783-5010 for more information.

Relay for Life needs sponsors

The Relay for Life of St. Charles Parish Courthouse Creampuffs are continuing a tradition started last year by producing a printed program outlining all the activities of the all-night event, set for May 15 at the West Bank Bridge Park in Luling.

The program will also feature information on all the local teams participating in Relay, as well as cancer prevention advice.

Companies, sports teams and individuals may advertise in the publication, with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Businesses may offer information about their services, and individuals can choose to honor a loved one touched by the disease.

The book will be available at Relay and promises to be a sought-after keepsake item for team members, their friends and families and other attendees.

The entire community is invited to attend Relay to enjoy great food, music, games and a festival atmosphere all to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The deadline to reserve ad space is April 30. For more information and ad prices, visit www.relayprogram.com or call (504) 491-9304.
