Luling barber shop makes the ‘cut’ for 20 years

Priding themselves on 20 years of quality barber services, Craig’s Barber Shop in Luling strives to give each customer a great cut without exhausting their day.

“We’re not your grandfather’s barber shop anymore,” said Cheryl Ricca, who co-owns the shop with her husband Craig. “We’ve evolved to meet the needs and trends seen in today’s hairstyling while remaining true to our trade.”

Barber shops have been around for centuries, but many of them went out of business in the 1960s when longer hairstyles for men were the rage.

“My father was a barber and went bankrupt – losing his shop – when business slowed many years ago because of the new styles that were emerging at the time,” said Ricca.

“As for my husband and I, we got into the business just as the long hair was beginning to exit the scene in the late 70s and early 80s. The exact styles that are in vogue today are what we were taught in barber school.”

Yet many of the lengthy styles that forced barbers to close shop nearly 50 years ago are making a comeback, resurrecting themselves in today’s youth.

Ricca, who boasts a strong customer base, says she’s keeping a watchful eye on these “bed-head” trends.

“It appears as though history is repeating itself,” she said. “We’re seeing more of the younger boys wearing shaggy hairstyles and less of the traditional tapered looks.”

While surviving the “short and long” hauls of being a barber are challenging, Ricca credits the shop’s unique customer service for keeping business afloat.

“People are so busy today. They hate to make appointments and hate to waste time waiting,” she said. “We strive to give our customers a great cut, and get them in and out without taking up their day.”

Combined, Craig’s Barber Shop offers 60 years of haircutting experience and conveniently serves both sides of St. Charles Parish.

“We cut long, medium and short styles, including crew cuts, flattops, fades, spikes, regular tapered men’s cuts, long-layered styles and everything in between,” added Ricca. “Gentlemen and boys are our main business, but we also offer simple ladies’ cuts and trims.”

Craig’s Barber Shop is located at 10 Wade St. in Luling, open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
