Destrehan Pharmacy has a message to both its current and potential customers: their services extend further than one might think.
Owner B.J. Burkenstock stressed the pharmacy accepts all insurance that will allow it to do so, and that there are many misconceptions a patient might have about the options available.
One such example is that the pharmacy accepts any insurance card or documentation, even if it displays the logo of another store or pharmacy on the card; some customers have noted they didn’t realize that was an option, he said.
Another is customers are sometimes told by insurance companies that they must fill their prescription by mail order in order to be covered, but Burkenstock said that isn’t always the case.
“Most of the time, we can accept the insurance and provide the same co-pay even if the card says CVS on it, for example,” he said. “With mail order, sometimes it’s made to seem like you need to go that way, but you don’t always have to. Most of the time we can fill a 90-day supply and match the co-pay. Give us a call and we’ll get you the best price we can and the same strong service we strive to provide everyone.”
He said the store’s base of clients has continued to grow since moving into its new store building at 12627 Airline Hwy. a little over a year ago. The new building adds more than 1,000 square feet of space, allowing a wider selection of items to be offered.
“And if we don’t have something, give us a call and request it, and we can start to carry it,” Pharmacy manager Steven Faucheaux said. “Maybe we just never had a need for it before and it can be on aisle 7 from now on.”
The new store also allowed for the addition of a drive thru, and coincided with new store hours, which are now Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The shift was made to allow customers an additional hour to conduct their business at the store on weekdays, accommodating those who may not get off work until later hours. Previously the store closed at 6 p.m. each weekday.
Destrehan Pharmacy has been doing business in St. Charles Parish for more than 50 years. Its stability and growth, both long term and recently, is something both Burkenstock and Faucheaux credit to the support of the community.
“Without that support, we wouldn’t be here,” Burkenstock said.
Over the past year, a number of new patients have come through transfer, a process Faucheaux said is easier than most think.
“When you think about changing your bank, or credit card, or going to a new pharmacy, it can get overwhelming,” Faucheaux said. “But in this particular instance, we can literally do it for you. Provide your information and we’ll take care of the rest. Typically we can get that process finished in 10 to 15 minutes.”
