River Region Drama Guild presents “Hairspray”

BOUTTE – The River Region Drama Guild presents “Hairspray” June 5, 6, and 7 at 7 p.m. and a Sunday, June 8 matinee at 2 p.m.

“Hairspray” sweeps audiences away to 1960s Baltimore, where change is in the air. Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad has a passion for dancing and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity.

“Hairspray provides the audience with a story about eliminating racism and discrimination and replacing it with tolerance and acceptance and treating all people with respect regardless of their skin color or weight,” Darby Berthelot, Drama Guild board member, said. “In addition to providing the community with an entertaining performance filled with some really great musical numbers, the underlining meaning reminds us that we most continue to work hard at eliminating racism and discrimination. Hairspray also provides members of our community an opportunity to come together to share their love for the performing arts while building life long friendships with individuals from every walk of life.”

The shows stars Shelby Johnson as Tracy, Lou Dudoussat as Edna, Warren Hovis as Wilbur, Coldin Grundmeyer as Link Larkin, Samantha Kennedy as Penny Pingleton, Neal Eli as Seaweed, Megan Sauzer Harms as Velma Von Tussel, Logan Tauzin as Amber Von Tussel, Dennis Tauzin as Corny Collins, A’layjah Alexander as Little Inez and Sybil Williams as Motormouth Mabel and also features several other local actors.

Hairspray is directed by Lucas Harms with musical direction by Natalie True and choreography by Jamie Landry. Pre-sale tickets are $15 and $20 cash or check only at the door.

Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/644141. Online sales end at 1 a.m. the morning of the performance.
