HOUMA – The Wetlands Discovery Center will host the 2014 Wetlands Youth Summit on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14.
The purpose of the Wetlands Youth Summit is to bring student leaders together to discuss issues relating to coastal restoration and preservation. The Wetlands Discovery Center has identified the need to develop the environmental literacy skills and understanding of young leaders capable of influencing positive change into the future in efforts to fortify local communities and protect Louisiana’s coast.
Students will travel by bus from Houma to Elmer’s Island and Grand Isle State Park to learn about the importance of barrier islands, how they are threatened and what is being done to restore them. After visiting other points of interest in the area, students will return to Houma for a seafood social.
Saturday will be filled with guest speakers and breakout sessions where students can choose to learn more about what most interests them. The students will then be led to develop action plans to address local concerns that can be implemented in their communities upon their return. The day will conclude with the Wetlands Olympics.
Food will be provided for all participants during the summit.
The fee to attend the Wetlands Youth Summit is $25 per student, due by Wednesday, June 11.
