Wildcats power past South Lafourche, 37-20

After Tropical Storm Lee delayed the game three days, the Destrehan Wildcats and South Lafourche Tarpons finally took the field on Monday night in the first regular season game of the year. And the Wildcats scored early and often on their way to a convincing 37-20 victory.

The defense provided much of the punch in the first half beginning with a blocked punt that defensive end Dereck Robinson returned 25 yards for the Wildcats’ first score of the game. Then linebacker Zachary Agurcia intercepted a Tarpon pass on the next drive that led to a 51-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dillon Dent to wide receiver Ricky Jefferson.

After the Tarpons struck back with a touchdown of their own to make the score 14-7, the Wildcat defense fought back with a blocked kick which was recovered by Wildcat defensive tackle Marrick Charles at the Destrehan one-yard line. Six plays later, the Wildcats were in the end zone again thanks to a 55-yard touchdown run from running back Kevin Smith.

Destrehan added another score before halftime when Dent broke off a 63-yard touchdown run to make the score 27-7.

The scoring slowed in the second half, but the Wildcats were the first to strike with a 33-yard field goal by Daniel Cimino. The Tarpons managed another touchdown near the end of the third quarter, but soon after Dent and Jefferson connected again on a 36-yard touchdown pass..

After that score, the Wildcats began resting the starters, which allowed South Lafourche to score once more on the last play of the game.

The Wildcats will take on St. James this Friday at 7 p.m. at home.
